You know how some days you want to grab a quick bite, but you’re not looking for anything fancy? Just something good, possibly healthy and not at all pretentious. That was pretty much the vibe the other day when one of us popped by a local institution – The Paraquet Restaurant. Affectionately known simply as 'Paraquet', this diner/restaurant was always something of a family favourite. And if you did visit Paraquet as a child, it's pretty safe to say that nothing much has changed about the layout and décor since that time. A white counter snakes around the section at the entrance with round, cushion, turnstile stools; formica tables in the tiled main dining room with the signature map of Bermuda placemats. Nostalgic icons are one element of Bermuda culture. What has been updated at the restaurant however, is their menu. Nowadays, you can find a variety of salads, wraps and flatbread paninis along with their traditional fare like fishcakes, homemade burgers and daily specials. With the original goal of staying on a somewhat healthy track, the Wahoo Salad was the order. Golden fried medallions of wahoo were served on a bed of mixed greens tossed with cheddar, onions, tomatoes, and personal favorites – mango and avocado. It’s a very filling dish and quite frankly if it wasn’t Paraquet – who still serves homemade pies – lunch would have been over. But, this is Paraquet..and they do make homemade pies...so lunch was NOT over yet! The indulgence of the day ended up being Apple pie – with the chill taken off – and a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. A great pie starts with a perfect crust, and Paraquet gets all A’s for its thick, flaky, flawlessly tanned, just-sweet-enough crust. Combined with the cinnamon spiced apples and creamy vanilla ice cream, this dessert was something of a tastebud party, (read: well worth the indulgence)
Paraquet is a sure thing with great food, wide variety, and honest portions when you are good and hungry. If you haven’t dropped by in a while, and are craving something simple and satisfying, it's highly recommended that you check them out. If you’re a regular, we’d love to hear what some of your favorite selections are. The Paraquet 68 South Shore Road Paget, Bermuda Phone: 441 236 9742 Facebook Page: Paraquet Restaurant
