When it comes to sweet treats in the east, only one name comes to mind: Sweet SAAK Bakery. Infamous islandwide for their cinnamon buns, known in various circles for a delightful carrot cake and those in the know will brag about their specialty cakes. On a weekly basis, countless Sweet SAAK devotees look for any excuse to get to St George’s for Cinnamon Bun Wednesdays; they are creating a following for their Friday Pizza Nights, and if you follow them on Instagram (start now), you’ll be aware of their ‘traditional’ Sunday breakfasts that have a growing legion of fans…now including Team #biteofbermuda.
Overcome by the constant stream of images on our phones, we ventured to St George’s on a Sunday morning to experience the Sweet SAAK breakfast for ourselves. If you are a fan of breakfast, it is strongly suggested that you do the same.

If you follow us on Instagram (and if you don't, you really should), you would know that one of us is currently spending some time in the spectacular City of London, a city which many of you are likely quite familiar with. London is a popular stop for Bermuda residents for school, work or vacations, and we thought it would be fun to showcase some of the foodie finds around a city that truly encompasses cultures and cuisines from all over the world. Seriously...London has it all. Feel a hankering for Malaysian food? Done. Craving a curry? There's a whole street for that. Want a cronut? Yup, those have made it across the pond as well (they are everywhere). Whatever you fancy, London can deliver. So when what you fancy is a good old-fashioned food market, London has that more than covered too, with the wonderfully historic Borough Market.
On the streets of Hamilton and the outskirts of town, you are hard pressed to miss a sign of Buzz Restaurant. With 5 outlets in walking distance of the city centre, and more island-wide, the franchise has made its mark within the Bermuda take-out marketplace. And with the success of the Buzz formula, in 2014, the owners decided to introduce diners to Devil’s Isle Café, the older, more sophisticated sibling to Buzz. Based on the crowds that have been frequenting the Burnaby Street, scene-stealing location since its launch, the classy family member has been welcomed with open arms.
September 1 marked the beginning of Lobster Season in Bermuda, and judging by the images we’ve seen with the tag #BermudaLobster, they have been in top demand since the opening bell. After the required 6 months off, lobster lovers are making sure to get their fill of the protected crustacean, as if the season was ending tomorrow. And with a lead in like this, you’d think this post was all about our Bermuda lobster experience, but alas friends, you’ll have to wait just a little longer for that one. Stay tuned!!
The point of that intro is to highlight the fact that in Bermuda, we have a special kind of love for seafood. It’s only natural that as we live on 21 square mile speck in the middle of the ocean our diets would be heavily influenced by the largest natural resource that surrounds us. It also follows that chefs both Bermudian born and those who have come to call Bermuda home are duly inspired by the ocean. The delicious evidence of that can be clearly seen at Mickey’s Beach Bar and Bistro at the Elbow Beach Hotel. It's that time of year again. The time where much of the planet (at least, the top half) starts gearing up for cooler temperatures. Where bikinis give way to boots and sweaters, pumpkin starts showing up as a main ingredient in everything from coffee to dessert, and that crazy co-worker starts sending weekly email updates that say things like "91 DAYS 'TIL CHRISTMAS!!" with an irritating picture of an elf or something. Yeah, you know who you are.
But wait. We live in Bermuda. And among the many, many (many) benefits of calling our tiny isle home is the fact that our summer lasts just a little bit longer. We're still on the beach when we first start hearing snow reports from 'less-lucky' friends and relatives in cold and distant lands (oh hello, Canada), and for those of us who are food inclined (and if you're not...you really may not enjoy our website), that means you have more time to high-tail it out to St. George's for a patio lunch or dinner at a new favourite of ours, The Beach House at Blackbeard's. Lunch is Served!
That’s right! As of September 8th, Marcus' Bermuda at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club is now serving lunch. And to commemorate the occasion, Chef Marcus Samuelsson himself graced Bermuda with his presence and hosted a cooking demonstration in the Princess Victoria Room on Friday afternoon, featuring a couple of the items from the lunch menu. If you think this was an event that we'd possibly have missed...think again. Occupation: Executive Chef, Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa
