Hi…we are food bloggers for Bite of Bermuda and we’re about to become addicted to the fish sandwiches at Woody’s! And we are NOT ASHAMED. If you’re not in the know, let us fill you in; Woody’s has a reputation for their fish sandwich that precedes the Bermuda’s Best Fish Sandwich competition, and it is well earned. Unlike some of the competitors, this sandwich was not created, modified or upgraded for the competition. This is a Woody’s fish sandwich in its all-year-round glory! The best part about that little fact is you have plenty of time to get one of these sandwiches (but our advice is GET ONE NOW!). Our trip to Woody’s on a Sunday afternoon was truly an example of time well spent. For those who may have an issue with traveling to damn near the end of the island for a fish sandwich, don’t worry about it. Use the time to decide what you’re going to order; "Fish sandwich made with wahoo, snapper or grouper with hot sauce and tartar sauce on lightly toasted raisin bread" (Snapper please!) While standing in line to place your order (because there will be a short line) relax and take the time to listen to other people's requests. This will be your guide to what you’ll get on your next visit (because you WILL be back) ‘Order of Shrimp...Fish Dinner with peas and rice.’ mmmm Noted After you place your order, take the time to order something cool to drink from the outside bar, take in the conversation and learn a thing or two from the patrons passionately conveying their points. Listen out for when your name is called. Collect your order and pause... Now THIS is a sandwich! No frills, no fancy garnishes, no instructions required. Essentially, just what we asked for; flawlessly fried Snapper, with a crispy seasoned batter crust covering the flaky white flesh that is oh-so-perfectly moist. It is NOT one of those sandwiches with sub par fish, piled so high that you need to unhinge your jaw to eat and you just can’t finish it in one sitting. It’s one that is just a little more than enough to fill you up enough leaving you satisfied and maybe planning your next visit to get another one. The tartar sauce is ‘twangy’ (it’s not a word, but you know what we mean) and the heat from the hot sauce hits on the back end, making us glad we took the time to think about our order. Again, we shared it…but kind of wish we didn’t. Because in no time…it was gone. And though it was devoured in a flash, it has been on our minds all week. Other than the look, taste, texture and addition of our condiments of choice, the absolute best thing about this sandwich is that it is available all the time. The next time you find yourself with some free moments and the appetite for a simple yet amazing traditional Bermuda fish sandwich, take the trek up to Woody’s…it’s well worth the time.
